Physiotherapy outreach program 

ASA works with a physiotherapist from Germany in training to deliver physiotherapy outreach services to 14 families of CYWD, especially those who lack resources to acquire physiotherapy services in other ways or to reach therapy clinics or hospitals. ASA’s resident physiotherapist travels to the homes of the CYWD, and takes them through various physiotherapy exercises tailored to their needs, strength levels, and particular condition. ASA’s physiotherapy outreach provides support and impactful rehabilitation for families of CYWD who would otherwise be unable to access such care, and it provides a pipeline to enhance the physical function of underserved CYWD and later recruit them into ASA’s school or community-based adaptive sports programs.

ASA aims to expand the physiotherapy outreach program through recruitment of new experienced physiotherapists, as well as trainees or volunteers. A better transport solution, owned by ASA (such as a van) would improve our capacity to reach new districts and locations and deliver physiotherapy and adaptive sports outreach to underserved families of CYWD throughout Uganda and beyond.  

Adaptive swimming program

Aquatic therapy and adaptive swimming has significant benefits for mobility, function, and health of CYWD, especially those with physical disabilities or neuromotor conditions¹⁰. In the adaptive swimming program, CYWD are taken to local swimming pools in Gulu, and ASA’s resident physiotherapist leads participants through aquatic therapy or adaptive swimming exercises that promote both rehabilitation, muscle strength development, coordination, and swimming confidence. 

ASA’s adaptive swimming program is new, having begun in August, 2025, but it has shown notable positive effects on participants’ physical function. The organization seeks to include adaptive swimming as one of ASA’s community-based programs when expanding to new districts.
